Building Sector

The building sector constitutes about 34.4% of global energy consumption and 31.5% of energy-related carbon dioxide emissions. Buildings use energy for heating, cooling, lighting, appliances, office equipment, food storage and preparation, and motors in elevators, pumps, and ventilating systems. Even a partial contribution to this energy, by designing or redesigning buildings to make use of solar energy, abates significant amounts of fuel per year. For better results, the design requires an integrated approach, taking account of not only the solar inputs and their interaction with the building envelope, but also the internal heat transfers in the building, not least those gains arising from the activities, equipment, plant and machines of the occupants.
